As streets fill with uncollected rubbish, the story on the ground is far bigger than waste—it’s about fairness, dignity, and the fight for a wage that reflects real life.
Refuse workers in Birmingham have rejected a “totally inadequate” pay deal, sparking an ongoing strike that has now led to the British Army being drafted in to manage the city’s waste crisis. But instead of focusing solely on the disruption, we should be asking: why are essential workers still battling for basic recognition?
This is the fourth time in five years that workers have had to take action. They’ve faced frozen wages, undervaluation, and constant pressure—despite doing one of the toughest, most essential jobs in our society. Their demands are not unreasonable—they’re asking for what any of us would want: a liveable wage and fair treatment.
The situation in Birmingham is a snapshot of a broader problem: working people across the country being squeezed while costs of living rise. Refuse workers have stood up. Are you ready to stand with them?
At UWA, we support all workers—refuse collectors, carers, cleaners, retail staff—because no one should be left behind. If you’re feeling undervalued or overlooked, it’s time to join a union that fights back.
