Statutory Sick Pay Reform: What It Means for UK Workers

From April 2025, UK employees will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) from the very first day of sickness absence — a major shift from the previous three-day waiting period.

The change, introduced under new employment law reforms, marks a significant step forward for workers’ rights and workplace health protections. The reform aims to ensure that financial support is available immediately for those too unwell to work — a move welcomed by campaigners, unions, and occupational health advocates.

What’s Changing?

Previously, workers had to wait three days before they became eligible for SSP, often leaving low-income employees with a gap in earnings during short-term illness. This created a dilemma for many — especially in retail, care, logistics, and hospitality — who felt compelled to attend work sick due to financial pressure.

As of April 2025, SSP will apply from Day 1 of absence, meaning more workers can afford to stay home when unwell, without risking their income.

Why This Matters

This reform doesn’t just help individuals — it’s a public health win. Allowing workers to recover without financial penalty helps reduce workplace transmission of illnesses like colds, flu, and COVID-like viruses, especially in environments where close contact is unavoidable.

It also tackles long-standing inequalities: previously, those in insecure or low-paid roles were hit hardest by unpaid sick days, widening the gap between frontline and salaried workers.

Know Your Rights

Despite the reform, many employers may not update policies immediately or may misapply the rule. That’s where we come in.

At United Workers Alliance, we ensure workers understand and enforce their rights.
